Ashland Community and Technical College offers Health Care Communication course in partnership with UK King’s Daughters Hospital

This is the second time this course is being offered, with the first happening in Spring 2024 following the initial partnership exploration in 2022. The course is ideal for anyone pursuing a career in nursing or other allied health fields.

Ashland Community and Technical College has partnered with UK King’s Daughters Hospital to offer a Health Care Communication course that will provide useful soft skills training for anyone heading into a career in nursing or other allied health fields. The partnership arose thanks to ACTC professor Dr. Mary Cat Flath pursuing a relationship with the hospital in 2022.

According to an article on Ashland Community and Technical College’s website, Flath explained who helped her bring about this collaborative course. She is quoted as saying, “My co-course lead is Mandy Medinger, director of talent acquisition, and with the help of Craig Harvey, executive director of organizational development, and Bethany Pemberton, director of education, we worked to organize the many details associated with offering this amazing opportunity for our ACTC health science technology students.”

The Health Care Communication (HST 103) course will help students understand the various types of ways humans communicate, such as verbally, written, and through body language, and how those ways of communication work in a healthcare setting between patients, medical staff, and caregivers. Additionally, students will be presented with different perspectives from individuals who work in healthcare, such as those who work in radiology, infection control, human resources, behavioral health, and more. Another aspect of the course is the discussion of media and health promotion campaigns and their effects.

Flath, who serves as a professor of anatomy and physiology, said of the ways UK King’s Daughters is assisting in making the course feasible, “With sessions being held on King’s Daughters’ main campus, it is a tremendous help that they are providing shuttle service for us to and from King’s Daughters so that we don’t have to worry about travel and parking. They work very hard to accommodate us, and I’m very excited. Round two of this course will be another amazing learning and networking opportunity for all of us.”
