The funding comes from the office of Governor Jim Justice and will be utilized for projects that will modernize the campus and expand student capacity at various campus buildings.
Shepherd University has received $30 million from the office of Governor Jim Justice to improve and modernize campus facilities. The funding was put into place via cooperation from the West Virginia Legislature, the West Virginia Treasurer’s Office, and the office of Governor Jim Justice.
According to an article on Shepherd University’s website, Dr. Scott Barton, who serves as Vice President for Finance and Administration, explained the student-first approach the university will take while utilizing the funding. Barton is quoted as saying, “We will allocate the funding with our students in mind, with a new dining facility, residence hall renovations, and a multi-purpose building at the top of the list. This dining facility will expand our capacity for serving students and enhance our ability to bring programs and events for students and visitors to campus. We will be able to upgrade the food service location options for students. The new multi-purpose building will place food service close to where students live rather than across campus.”
The funding is expected to have a far reach on campus, with a number of projects planned. Included on the list of projects is the renovation of Potomac Place, Dunlop, and Printz residence halls, a new maintenance facility, infrastructural upgrades to athletic fields, renovation and repurposing of the East Campus dining hall, a multi-purpose building, and a dining facility.
Dr. Mary J.C. Hendrix, the university’s president, was quoted as saying, “I am so appreciative of the work done by Governor Jim Justice, Senate President Craig Blair, House Speaker Roger Hanshaw, and Treasurer Riley Moore, who worked with Shepherd University representatives to identify and secure this critical funding. We would also like to thank Delegates Eric Householder and Paul Espinosa, as well as Senators Patricia Rucker and Jason Barrett, for their support.”
Dr. Hendrix added, “This money will support the modernization of key facilities on campus to meet the needs of our students and keep Shepherd University a vibrant school of choice for students in West Virginia and beyond.”
