Muskingum University has received $1,031,039 in Choose Ohio First funding from the Ohio Department of Higher Education. The Choose Ohio First program, which began in 2008, aims to enhance the state’s workforce in STEM fields by helping interested students pursue degrees in science, technology, engineering, and math. Over the past four years, Muskingum University has received more than $4 million in Choose Ohio First funding to distribute as student scholarships.

According to an article on Muskingum University’s website, Paul S. Szalay, Ph.D., who serves as the university’s Chair of the Division of Natural, Applied, and Health Sciences, was quoted as saying, “We appreciate the continued support from the Ohio Department of Higher Education’s Choose Ohio First program. This new award recognizes the successes we have had supporting and developing our STEM scholars since our first COF grant in 2008. This year’s award helps us continue serving the educational and career development needs of our COF students as we prepare them to impact the future of healthcare in Ohio.”

Choose Ohio First scholarships at Muskingum University are available to both undergraduate and graduate students in the biology, biochemistry, nursing, medical laboratory studies, and Master of Occupational Therapy programs. The university will also use funding for its Healthcare Workforce Preparation Pathways and Partnerships in Appalachian Ohio initiative, which aims to help lessen the healthcare worker shortage in the state.

Provost Jennifer Dugan said, “Muskingum University is proud to lead this effort to strengthen the healthcare workforce, improve educational access, and support the region’s economic vitality. The COF initiative is set to make a lasting impact on the University, its students, and the broader Appalachian community. As an institution historically committed to educational access and affordability, Muskingum continues to pursue our mission in ways that contribute to the thriving future of Ohio."
