Mid Michigan College to offer Manufacturing Pre-Employment Short-Term Training program

The program will introduce students to the skills and knowledge they will need to seek an entry-level manufacturing position.

Mid Michigan College is offering a Manufacturing Pre-Employment Short-Term Training program from February 3 to February 14 on its Harrison campus. The program is intended to provide students with the hands-on skills and additional knowledge they need to be prepared to seek an entry-level position in the field of manufacturing. Completing the program comes with the benefit of receiving a certification from the National Coalition of Certification Centers and two credits toward courses in the college’s Advanced Integrated Manufacturing program.

According to an article on Mid Michigan College’s website, Autumn Matthews, who serves as the college’s Director of Workforce & Economic Development, was quoted as saying of the new program, “We’re excited to offer this training along with the Central Michigan Manufacturers Association and local Michigan Works teams to help build a skilled workforce for our manufacturing partners.” She added, “We want to encourage anyone interested in a manufacturing career to start here, start at Mid. We have strong connections to local employers, experienced instructors, and state-of-the-art labs where you can learn hands-on.”

The program takes place Monday through Friday from February 3 to February 14 from 8am to 4:30pm. In order to participate in the program, individuals must be at least 18 years old and have a GED or a high school diploma, as well as basic reading and math skills. No prior knowledge of or experience with manufacturing is necessary.

According to the Manufacturing Pre-Employment Short-Term Training program webpage, the skills that students will learn during the course of the program include “Demonstrate how to use common hand tools including Phillips and flat-head screwdrivers, pliers, hammers, adjustable wrenches, socket wrenches, and Allen wrenches; Explain how to isolate and contain non-conforming parts; Explain the purpose of wearing personal protective equipment and identify the different levels of protection; Describe OSHA requirements for safe entry when working in a confined space,” among others. This information will be imparted to students via lectures, hands-on activities, and demonstrations.

The program’s cost is $3,225, though MichiganWorks! funding may be available to help qualified students offset the cost of training.

Successfully completing the program will award students with a Starrett Precision Measurement Instrument Certification from the National Coalition of Certification Centers (NC3) and two credits toward the college’s Advanced Integrated Manufacturing (AIM) Program.

Matthews said of these benefits, “Earning the industry-recognized NC3 certification allows students to demonstrate their skills to employers. And the credit toward the AIM program saves students time and money if they decide to return to Mid and advance their skills in the pursuit of an associate degree.”
