The college’s $780,000 in funding will go toward scholarships for students who are pursuing STEM education.
Ursuline College has received funding from the state of Ohio via the Choose Ohio First scholarship initiative. The Choose Ohio First program first began in 2008 as a means of strengthening the state’s STEM workforce and increasing the number of students pursuing an education in STEM fields at Ohio colleges and universities.
According to an article on Ursuline College’s website, David King, EdD., the school’s president, was quoted as saying of the funding, “The Choose Ohio First Program helps make an Ursuline education accessible to so many of our students from Northeast Ohio and beyond. The recipients of these scholarships graduate to become some of the region’s most dedicated and talented nurses, scientists, and teachers.”
Ursuline College received $780,000 to give out to students as Choose Ohio First scholarships over the next five years. These scholarships will go to students who are studying in STEM majors and pursuing a certificate or degree. Also eligible are students who are studying nursing or education with a focus on STEM.
Forty-six colleges across the state are receiving a portion of the $32.5 million Choose Ohio First funding that will be distributed over the next five years.
Speaking about the Choose Ohio First program, Ohio Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted said, “The Choose Ohio First program strengthens our commitment to preparing students for in-demand careers while ensuring that Ohio’s workforce remains competitive, dynamic, and ready to meet the needs of our growing economy.”
