The Early Assurance Opportunity will give Oakland Community College students who transfer to Michigan State University as pre med students an enhanced opportunity for admission provided they meet certain requirements.
Oakland Community College and Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine have signed an agreement, an Early Assurance Opportunity, that will give Oakland Community College students who transfer to Michigan State University as undergraduate pre med students an enhanced opportunity for admission to the College of Human Medicine. Alongside the opportunity for early admission, students will also receive academic advising focused on preparing for admission to MSU and the College of Human Medicine.
According to an article on Oakland Community College’s website, the chancellor of Oakland Community College, Peter Provenzano, Jr., said, “This outstanding partnership provides OCC students with a clear pathway to a smooth transition into MSU and the College of Human Medicine. The [EAO] will especially benefit our Health Sciences students who plan to transfer to MSU with the ultimate goal of attending medical school.”
This opportunity is available for students who are interested in working with individuals in underserved populations upon receiving their medical education. In order to eligible to apply for the EAO, students must meet at least one of the following requirements: they must have graduated from a low-income high school; be a first-generation college student; be eligible for a Pell Grant; have graduated from an underserved area; or have an interest in pursuing a high-need medical specialty.
Oakland Community College students who are interested in seeking the Early Admission Opportunity will begin to receive academic advising that is intended to help them gain admission to Michigan State University and later to the College of Human Medicine. Once transferred to Michigan State University as a pre med student, students who are selected through the Early Admission Opportunity will be assured admission to the College in their senior year.
Aron Sousa, M.D., the Dean of the MSU College of Human Medicine, said, “We are committed to bringing well-qualified premedical students from Oakland Community College to MSU and the College of Human Medicine. This is a long-term vision for enhancing health care in Southeast Michigan and beyond. Local students may wish to return home one day to practice in greater Detroit.”
