University of Rio Grande receives two gifts for scholarship endowments

A total of $2.8 million from two separate endowments will create two new scholarship funds at the University of Rio Grande to continue making higher education more accessible to more students.

The University of Rio Grande has received two gifts from two different estates, totaling $2.8 million, both establishing new scholarship funds for students. The Don Hodge Scholarship Fund and the Roger L. and Cora M. Baker Memorial Scholarship Fund will provide financial assistance for students pursuing degrees at the University of Rio Grande.

According to an article on the University of Rio Grande’s website, university president Ryan Smith is quoted as saying of the gifts, "These gifts allow us to expand scholarship opportunities that will open doors for students. We are deeply grateful for the generosity and vision of these donors, whose legacies will empower generations of students to achieve their academic goals.” He added, “These gifts highlight the profound generosity of individuals who believe in the transformative power of scholarships and Rio. Their foresight will have an enduring impact, ensuring that the promise of education remains within reach.”

The Don Hodge Scholarship Fund is in honor of lifetime Gallia County resident Don Hodge, who was also an advocate for education. The scholarship established by his estate is intended to give students who otherwise would not have the opportunity the financial assistance they need to pursue their education goals at the University of Rio Grande.

The Roger L. and Cora M. Baker Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by the estate of Cora Baker, who was a longtime supporter of the University of Rio Grande. The scholarship will be awarded to students who demonstrate financial need and who show great academic potential.

Both scholarship funds intend to provide the means for future generations of students to be able to attend the University of Rio Grande and pursue their dreams.
