Washtenaw Community College partners with Michigan Works! Southeast for “Power UP Your Future” program

The partnership will help students interested in working in the mobility industry receive the training they need to enter the competitive market for the jobs they seek.

Washtenaw Community College is collaborating with Michigan Works! Southeast to bring the “Power UP Your Future” program to life, giving students the training, skills, and opportunities they need to excel in the mobility industry, which includes electric vehicles and other aspects like marine, aerial, and public transit.

According to an article on Washtenaw Community College’s website, as a result of the collaborative effort with Michigan Works! Southeast, the college has recently introduced two new electric vehicle-related programs as well as built a new electric vehicle lab and acquired new electric vehicles, like Teslas, for its fleet. The two new programs are certificate programs for EV service technicians and EV fundamentals and safety. Additionally, there is now a new concentration in its Transportation Technologies focused on EVs.

The “Power UP Your Future” program seeks to find qualified people to begin training in these areas to become prepared for the lucrative and in-demand electric vehicle workforce in the state. Michigan Works! Southeast is an agency that helps provide people with job training and career advising and partners with education providers to help connect job seekers with certain industries, such as partnering with Washtenaw Community College to help people prepare for mobility careers.

The partnership will provide up to $5,000 in job training to eligible individuals to take advantage of the opportunity. In order to be eligible, an individual must be at least 17 years old, be a United States citizen, not be enrolled in secondary education, and register with the Selective Service. Additionally, individuals must have an interest in one of the following career paths that are applicable to the electric vehicle industry: automotive service technicians, computer occupation, electrical & electronic engineering technologists, electrical engineers, industrial machinery mechanics, maintenance & repair workers, assemblers & fabricators, mechanical engineers, production workers, and software developers.
