Students who earn an associate degree from Walters State Community College will now have a seamless transfer pathway to earn a bachelor degree from Tusculum University.
Tusculum University and Walters State Community College have signed an agreement that will make it easier for students who hold associate degrees from Walters State Community College to earn a bachelor degree from Tusculum University. The agreement was officially signed on August 7 and ensures that there will be minimal additional general education requirements to meet in pursuit of a bachelor degree.
According to an article on Tusculum University’s website, the president of Walters State Community College, Dr. Tony Miksa, shared his gratitude for the agreement coming together and the impact it will have on his students. He is quoted as saying, “This agreement increases the opportunities available for our students. Walters State students have always been welcomed at Tusculum, and this agreement makes the transition easier. On behalf of Walters State, thank you to Dr. Hummel and his administration for their willingness to work together to make the transfer process seamless for our students.”
The agreement provides students with support services from both institutions before, during, and after the transfer process, giving students a large network of resources as they pursue their bachelor degree. Additionally, the agreement provides the opportunity for students to choose to be admitted at both Walters State Community College and Tusculum University at the same time, giving them the chance to earn their general education requirements and an associate degree from Walters State before beginning the bachelor degree courses with Tusculum.
Tusculum University’s president, Dr. Scott Hummel, said, “Partnering with Walters State on this student-focused agreement will greatly benefit those who want to further their education with a bachelor’s degree. Students will receive an excellent foundation in subjects at Walters State that will be supplemented with an outstanding upperclassman experience at Tusculum. That will prepare them to be career-ready professionals. We are grateful to Walters State for teaming with us to strengthen the pathway for students to earn their four-year degree.”
While the Walters State Community College associate degree will cover many of the general education credits required by Tusculum University, students who transfer to pursue a bachelor degree must take two additional courses: a religion course and a civic studies course. The Associate of Arts, Associate of Fine Arts, and Associate of Science degrees earned by students at Walters State Community College will otherwise transfer simply and students can pursue a bachelor degree in art and design, biology, chemistry, communication, computer science, criminal justice, English, environmental science, history, mathematics, political science, or psychology. Students can also take their Associate of Science in Teaching degree into any of the education programs at Tusculum.
Dr. David Cook, the provost and vice president of academic affairs at Tusculum University, explained that the transfer agreement can also help set up students to further their education even more and eventually receive a graduate-level degree. “This agreement is exciting and forward-thinking and supports students every step of the way as they work toward their bachelor’s degree. We look forward to serving students from Walters State and providing them with mentoring and a one-on-one connection from our expert faculty and dedicated staff that will produce an outstanding academic experience. Once they have completed their bachelor’s degree, Tusculum can help them take their studies further with our strong master’s degrees,” he said.
