Eastern Michigan University receives $6.5 gift in support of men’s and women’s golf teams

GameAbove, a philanthropic organization, has given numerous donations to Eastern Michigan University. This most recent gift brings its total donation amount to $34.5 million.

Eastern Michigan University has received another gift from GameAbove in support of its men’s and women’s golf teams. The donation of $6.5 million to the Eastern Michigan University Department of Athletics brings GameAbove’s total gift amount to the university’s golf teams up to $14.5 million, which is the largest amount a single donor has ever given to a single sport in the school’s history. In total, GameAbove has given the university $34.5 million to date.

According to an article on Eastern Michigan University’s website, Keith J. Stone, the chairman of GameAbove, was quoted as saying, "GameAbove’s reinvestment in EMU Golf further bonds our strategic partnership to build a national powerhouse. By empowering coaches, academic awards, and every side of player development, we are creating an unrivaled environment to attract top recruits and cultivate champions. Together with the GameAbove Golf Performance Center, EMU Golf is poised to become a perennial contender, bringing pride and recognition to EMU for years to come."

Eastern Michigan University’s GameAbove Golf Performance Center opened in January 2024 at the Eagle Crest Golf Course. The building is the result of an $8 million donation from GameABove and features locker rooms, meeting rooms, practice areas, and all-weather simulation equipment that will allow the athletes to practice their golf game year round. The GameAbove Golf Performance Center is the latest in a long line of buildings and centers constructed thanks to financial gifts from GameAbove, including the Brian Clouse Atrium and Football Players Lounge, the George Gervin GameAbove Center, and the GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology.

This newest $6.5 million gift from GameAbove will go even further to support the men’s and women’s golf teams. It will help enhance the infrastructure of the teams by supporting equipment upgrades, travel funding, compensation packages for coaches, the hiring of additional support staff, and player development activities.

The Vice President and Director of Athletics at Eastern Michigan University Scott Wetherbee said of GameAbove’s support, "Thanks to GameAbove’s generosity, our golf programs are set to reach unprecedented heights. This support enhances our competitive edge and significantly enriches our golfers’ educational and athletic experiences."
