Summer program at Bay College prepares students for college

The Bay College Kickstart Program is aimed at anyone who needs to refresh their math and English skills before going to college, either for the first time or again after a break.

Bay College has a new program that will help college-bound students of all ages become more prepared for the transition into higher education through math and English help and providing guidance for their new life stage. The program will run in June, July, and August, and will be available in-person at the school’s Iron Mountain and Escanaba campuses and online via Zoom or asynchronously.

According to an article on Bay College’s website, Gabi Boyle, who serves as an advisor at Bay College, was quoted describing her hopes for the program and what she expects participants will get out of it. Boyle said, “We understand the challenges students face when transitioning to college. Through the Bay College Kickstart Program, we aim to ease these concerns by providing resources such as academic support, transportation, free school supplies, and meals. We want every participant to have the tools to thrive academically.”

To be eligible to participate in the Kickstart program, individuals must have a high school diploma or a GED and reside in the state of Michigan. The program is intended for anyone who is planning to attend college in the upcoming Fall 2024 semester, whether that be for the first time or as a return after a length of time. The program is broken up into two sessions: one that focuses on English skills and one that focuses on math skills, though the sessions are scheduled in a way that will allow for participants to attend both sessions and brush up on both skill sets.

Among the program’s offerings are math and English instruction from college instructors, individual mentoring, time management workshops, study skills workshops, career and degree exploration, and more. There are also snacks and lunches provided during each session, free school supplies, access to loaner technology, and transportation assistance. Participants may be eligible to receive up to $500 just for completing the Kickstart Program.

Marc Pilon, a math instructor at Bay College, believes this to be a great program: “This is an incredible opportunity for students from diverse backgrounds to prepare themselves for a successful college experience.”
