Greeneville Lions Club partners with Tusculum University on campus beautification project, campus food pantry

Tusculum University’s campus has 400 new flowers in residence thanks to the Greeneville Lions Club, which noticed the area around Pioneer Park has been bare of flowers for quite some time. The Lions Club reached out to Tusculum University to help beautify the campus by planting red and white vinca flowers around the stadium where both Tusculum University’s baseball team and the Flyboys of the Appalachian League play their games.

According to an article on Tusculum University’s website, Nancy Southerland, the secretary of the Greeneville Lions Club, was quoted as saying, “One of the things Lions International focuses on is the environment and helping in the community. We felt we could conduct a beautification project. Plus, we wanted to find ways we could partner with Tusculum. We thought the flower planting would be a good project to get us and Tusculum working together as well as fulfill some of our club’s principles and support the Flyboys. We just figured it would be a good community thing to do. It makes the space look as if it is finished. This has gone so smoothly with everybody helping.”

Just in time for the Flyboys’ season opener of June 4, the area around the stadium has received a floral makeover with flowers from local business Sunnyhill Greenhouse. Assisting in the planting were Susan Price and Garrett Hensley of the Greeneville Lions Club, Tusculum Facilities Management Department, and the Flyboys’ general manager Brandon Bouschart.

“We are extremely excited and thankful for Tusculum University and the Greeneville Lions Club for coming together and making the place the Greeneville Flyboys call home even more special,” said Bouschart.

Carrie Maggert, Tusculum University’s vice president of operations, said of the effort, “We are extremely grateful to the Lions Club for its thoughtfulness in including the university in its outreach efforts. This project provided some beautiful color to that part of campus and will delight our guests at the park. We value our connections with the community and are thrilled we were able to collaborate with the Lions Club on this initiative.”

The Greeneville Lion Club is also assisting the university in another initiative, as well. The Pioneer Exchange, which is a food pantry and clothing closet available to those in need on Tusculum University’s campus, will also receive a helping hand from the Greeneville Lion Club.
