Three teams from EMU participated in the competition, and EMU as a whole placed number one in Michigan.
Eastern Michigan University is celebrating the success of its Information Assurance Student Association at the Fall 2023 National Cyber League competition.
The competition involves cybersecurity problems and challenges in ten categories: cryptography, enumeration, exploitation, forensics, log analysis, network traffic analysis, open source intelligence, password cracking, scanning and reconnaissance, and web application exploitation.
According to an article on Eastern Michigan University’s website, Mohamed Qatu, who serves as the dean of the GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology, praised the students who participated in the competition, saying, “We are incredibly proud of our Information Assurance Student Association for their outstanding performance in the cyber league competition. Their accomplishments are a testament to their hard work, talent, and passion for cybersecurity. Their success also reflects the exceptional quality of our cybersecurity education programs at EMU.”
A member of the Information Assurance Student Association, Sara Johnson, who is also working toward her bachelor’s and master’s degree in Information Assurance and Cyber Defense, participated in the competition for the first time this year and found the exercises to be useful learning experiences. She said of the experience, “Participating in the cyber league pushed me to be resourceful and constantly open to learning new things. Especially since this was my first competition, I was faced with so many concepts that I had never had to deal with before. Research was a huge part of my cyber league experience, and I have no doubts that it will be a big part of the ever-changing world of cybersecurity.”
Jarrett Signoretti, another student majoring in Information Assurance and Cyber Defense, participated in his third competition, and placed 27th out of 7,929 in the whole competition, and within the top 5 in the categories of log analysis, network traffic analysis, and password cracking. He said, “Competing in my third season of the cyber league has yielded me great results. The individual games helped me gauge my cybersecurity skill set. Cybersecurity is a broad field that encompasses many jobs and skills. I realized which areas I excel at and which I could strengthen. Knowing my strengths can help me specialize when planning my career.”
