New course offerings at Monroe County Community College will educate healthcare students on current issues within healthcare

Issues and Trends in Health Care and Introduction to Healthcare Professions are now available to students pursuing a future career in healthcare.

Monroe County Community College has introduced two new courses for students taking healthcare-related classes to help strengthen foundations and keep students on top of current trends in the field.

According to an article on Monroe County Community College's website, the two new classes are Issues and Trends in Health Care and Introduction to Healthcare Professions. The courses are intended to be taken alongside each other, according to Dr. Kimberly Lindquist, who is the dean of Health Sciences at MCCC. “We highly recommend this course along with ‘Introduction to Healthcare Professions (HLTSC 115)’ for those students who are interested in a career in healthcare, but have not made the decision which field to pursue, be it nursing, respiratory therapy or another field. For many students who are currently or planning to enroll in their initial general education courses, these two courses provide a very solid exploration of the many opportunities and diverse specialty areas in healthcare,” said Dr. Lindquist.

Issues and Trends in Health Care will explore many important topics in healthcare that may not be covered in other courses, like contemporary issues such as COVID-19 protocols and social justice, and the ways in which politics, ethics, and economics can affect healthcare providers as they deliver patient care.

Introduction to Healthcare Professions will provide an overview of many different potential careers within the sphere of healthcare. Topics covered include patient care, patient safety, ethics, and communication. In addition, students who take the course will earn a Basic Certificate in Quality and Safety from the Institute for Health Care Improvement.
