Ohio University’s President Gonzalez announces Presidential Opportunity Promise Award

The new scholarship will be available for Pell-eligible students beginning in Fall 2024.

Some students at Ohio University have a new opportunity to earn their higher education at a significantly better cost: free.

As announced by President Gonzalez on October 18, the Presidential Opportunity Promise Award will cover tuition for first-year, Pell-eligible students who reside in Athens County and all contiguous Ohio counties. It is a renewable scholarship for all of the student’s four years at Ohio University.

According to an article on Ohio University's website, President Gonzalez said, “I firmly believe that education is the pathway to opportunity. This new scholarship program will provide increased access to an affordable, high-quality education to countless students in our region.”

This new full tuition award opportunity builds upon and is in the tradition of the OHIO Admissions Promise and the OHIO Regional Promise, both of which also cover the remaining tuition for eligible students who qualify for the Pell grant.

In order to apply for this new scholarship, students must live in Athens, Hocking, Meigs, Morgan, Perry, Vinton, or Washington County, have a 3.0 high school GPA, complete their FAFSA, and confirm that they are seeking to enroll at the Athens campus in 2024 as a full time student.

The deadline to apply for the Presidential Opportunity Promise Award is November 15, 2023.
