Oakland Community College is hosting an inaugural Midwestern Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion conference called “Bridging Equality: Creating Innovative Spaces for K-12 and Higher Education.” The conference will be held on October 27 and educators and education professionals from across the midwest will be attending the conference.

In an article on Oakland Community College’s website, Kristina Marshall, who serves as the Conference Chair and OCC Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Justice, was quoted as saying, “We are thrilled to host this unique regional event to improve dialogue and share best practices in the delivery of student services. This conference brings together education professionals from diverse educational settings who typically operate within their own separate sphere of influence. The novel nature of educators—regardless of the educational setting—gathering to share cutting-edge teaching and learning strategies is not only a rare occurrence but is potentially vital in the evolving landscape of meeting student needs.”

The conference aims to serve as a transdisciplinary meeting of education professionals from different settings, including K-12, colleges, and universities from Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin.

The keynote speaker at the conference is Kurt Russell, who was the 2022 National Teacher of the Year. His presentation will cover the state of diversity, equity, and inclusion in education. Other speakers will cover topics such as implicit bias, accessibility challenges, and teaching children who have had adverse childhood experiences.

The conference will take place at Oakland Community College’s Auburn Hills Campus from 8am to 4pm on Friday, October 27. Tickets are $175 each and will grant access to all of the conference’s activities.
