St. Clair County Community College partners with Detroit Promise to offer free tuition

The Detroit Promise is a program that provides free college tuition to students who live in Detroit and attend Detroit schools. St. Clair County Community College is now affiliated with the program so Detroit students can attend there for free, as well.

St. Clair County Community College (or SC4) and The Detroit Promise have teamed up. The Detroit Promise is a program that allows Detroit-based students a tuition-free path to four-year, two-year, or trade credentials. The partnership will expand the options for students who live in Detroit and attend high school there when it comes to no-cost postsecondary education.

SC4 Chief DEI Officer Jessica Brown was quoted in an article on the school’s website about the partnership, saying, “We are excited to partner with The Detroit Promise. While many of our students are St. Clair County residents, many more come to our college and community from other areas to enroll in classes. Last year, for instance, we welcomed students from more than 200 zip codes. This partnership with The Detroit Promise—enhanced by our College Housing options for SC4 students—will allow us to welcome and support more Detroit-area students seeking higher education.”

Wytrice Harris, who serves as the Detroit Promise Senior Director of College Success and Partnerships, was also quoted as saying, “I am thrilled to be expanding our partnerships and to welcome SC4 to The Detroit Promise. More higher education partners mean more options for students to pursue a degree or credential that will shape their futures. This growing support speaks to the value of this program for the students and educational institutions involved, as well as for the future of the state’s workforce and economy.”

The Detroit Promise program teams with its higher education partners to work toward creating better access to education and success for Detroit students as they work toward their postsecondary degrees. The program began in 2013 and has since supported more than 5,000 students from more than 50 high schools in Detroit. The Promise pays for the entire cost of tuition and other expenses after a TIP of Pell funding is applied to the bill of a student. The Promise is a noncompetitive award that is open to any student who applies and meets the requirements.

St. Clair County Community College is one of only eight community colleges around Michigan that offers college housing, and is the only one in Southeast Michigan.

SC4 also offers a variety of other reduced and free tuition options and programs that are designed to help students in Michigan and the midwest region earn college credit, scholarships, and dual enrollment. SC4 is also dedicated to providing access to Federal Pell and other grants, Tuition Incentive Program, the Michigan Reconnect Scholarship, the Michigan Achievement Scholarship, middle colleges, and more.
