Cedarville University received $1 million gift for pharmacy program

Dr. Lucy Malmberg has recently donated $1 million to Cedarville University’s pharmacy program as part of the University’s One Thousand Days Transformed: The Campaign for Cedarville.

Dr. Lucy Malmberg, a nationally renowned pharmacist, has recently donated $1 million to support Cedarville University’s School of Pharmacy by establishing the George and Lucy Malmberg Foundation Pharmacy Scholarship.

The scholarship is set up to support recruitment of new students as well as to create a hardship fund which will offer financial aid to students who, due to unforeseen circumstances, are facing financial difficulty with regard to paying for school. The scholarship will also finance travel expenses for students taking part in professional organization meetings and medical mission trips.

Dr. Malmberg’s donation is part of Cedarville’s $175 million One Thousand Days Transformed: The Campaign for Cedarville, a fundraising campaign set up by the school. So far, Cedarville has commitments of over $130 million. The campaign looks to expand the facilities at the school, provide a financial foundation for the university’s sustainability, maximize affordability for students, and enhance the experience of the school’s students.

In an article published on Cedarville University’s website, Dr. Malmberg was quoted about her gift, saying, “Pharmacy is a profession of compassion and care when it is lived at its best. People need relational, compassionate care from someone who is medically and pharmaceutically competent. People need to know that they are known, loved and cared for, and pharmacy is a way of doing that.”

Dr. Malmberg is the former CEO and board chair of Wedgewood Pharmacy in Swedesboro, New Jersey, and an entrepreneur, pharmacist, and educational philanthropist. She and her late husband, George Malmber, co-founded the Wedgewood Pharmacy back in 1981, where they worked together to change the nature of the local community pharmacy. They were invested in supporting Christian pharmacists especially in their quest to continue to transform the pharmaceutical industry.

In her over four decades of pharmacy experience, Dr. Malmberg has served on many boards and associations such as the Christian Pharmacists Fellowship International, where she met the dean of Cedarville University’s school of pharmacy, Dr. Jeff Bates.

Dr. Bates was quoted about Dr. Malmberg’s donation, saying, “The school of pharmacy is beyond grateful for this generous donation that will allow us to recruit Christian pharmacy students. Dr. Malmberg’s donation will transform our ability to shape our students throughout their pharmacy journey so that their cost of attendance is contained, and they can be eternally focused and missionally minded."

The $1 million gift will be divided so that $750,000 will fund student recruitment efforts with the goal of continuing the growth of the university’s pharmacy program. The rest of the money will be broken down into $50,000 for professional development for students, $100,000 for the aforementioned hardship fund, and $100,000 for pharmacy students who contribute at professional pharmacy organization meetings, or travel on mission trips.
