St. Clair County Community College adds wheelchair basketball team

A new wheelchair basketball team will begin this fall at St. Clair County Community College after the school hosted a wheelchair basketball event at its fieldhouse last year.

St. Clair County Community College has recently announced the launch of a wheelchair basketball team which will begin in the upcoming fall semester.

The wheelchair basketball team is open to all St. Clair County Community College students and community members who have disabilities, or who are able bodied but passionate about wheelchair basketball. Priority, however, will be given to students enrolled at the school. Interested people who want to join the first season’s team can get more information by emailing mjwhittredge@sc4.edu, contacting the Athletics Department by phone at 810-989-5670, or online.

The team will be co-ed and bring total athletic offerings at St. Clair County Community College to 16 teams. Currently, the school offers wrestling, volleyball, softball, soccer, golf, Esports, dance, cross country, bowling, basketball, and baseball. The addition of wheelchair basketball makes the school a leader in adaptive sports offerings in Michigan.

In an article on St. Clair County Community College’s website, Athletic Director Dale Vos talked about the new offering, saying, “Our Skippers Athletics program continues to grow and flourish, and the addition of adaptive sports at SC4 is a significant step forward in creating a more inclusive and diverse campus community. We’re thrilled to offer this new opportunity for both athletes and fans.”

Last fall, wheelchair basketball teams from across the Midwest and Canada met at St. Clair County Community College for an intense weekend of wheelchair basketball. The event was hosted by the University of Michigan Adaptive Sports and Fitness department in partnership with St. Clair. The Wolverine Invitational kicked off the event and the second competitive season of wheelchair basketball at the University of Michigan.

This year, the wheelchair basketball team at St. Clair plans to take part in exhibition contests and games as part of its first-ever season. The team is also preparing to participate in this year’s Wolverine Invitational, which will return to the school’s Fieldhouse in late September.

Vos talked about the privilege of hosting the event, saying, “The opportunity to host the Wolverine Invitational right here on our own campus with high-caliber collegiate athletes from institutions such as the University of Michigan is extremely exciting. We’ll provide more information on game schedules and more as soon as details are finalized.”
