Miami Valley Career Technology Center adds new registered nursing diploma program

Miami Valley Career Technology Center is adding a Registered Nurse Diploma program to their roster of healthcare classes. Students with an LPN license can sign up for a twelve month, fifty week program in MVCTC’s adult education division.

Students in Ohio have a new option when it comes to studying to become a Registered Nurse. The Miami Valley Career Technology Center has announced a new 12 month, 50 week diploma program in its Adult Education division. The class will have online, classroom, laboratory, and clinical components.

Students who graduate from the Registered Nurse Diploma Program will be able to take the NCLEX-RN License Exam, which allows passing students to work in healthcare settings as an RN.

The Register Herald talked to Miami Valley Career Technology Center Superintendent, Dr. Nick Weldy, about the new degree program. “The Miami Valley Career Technology Center Adult Education Registered Nurse Diploma program is a project that the district has been working on for more than a year. This new opportunity will provide a bridge for those nurses with an LPN license to quickly and effectively obtain the education needed to become a registered nurse. In addition, it also provides an avenue for some of MVCTC’s high school healthcare students to be able to receive credit for LPN courses while still in high school and fast-track their ability to enroll in the registered nurse program shortly after graduation. It is an amazing opportunity for both MVCTC’s secondary and adult education healthcare students,” said Dr. Weldy.

President and CEO of the Greater Dayton Area Hospital Association, Sarah Hackenbracht, was quoted in an article on MVCTC’s website about the benefit of a new RN diploma program in the area, saying, “MVCTC’s investment in our healthcare workforce is one of the critical partnerships that will help us meeting the demand for healthcare workers now and in the future. Their new model of a 12-month LPN to RN program will help our region ensure we have the depth and breadth of nursing expertise in our region’s hospitals and healthcare facilities.”

Peter Van Runkle, Executive Director of the Ohio Health Care Association, added to the sentiment, saying, “It’s like a drop in the bucket, because we really need a lot more RNs.”

Students enrolling in the Registered Nurse Diploma Program will take three classes in Adult Nursing, Introduction to Pharmacology and Pharmacology, Community Health Nursing, and Nursing Care of the Child, two classes of Professional Transitions, Maternal-Child Nursing, a capstone class, and Clinical Rotations.

Director of Nursing in Adult Education at Miami Valley Career Technology Center, Ms. Stephanie Benson, MSN, RN, talked about the comprehensiveness of the program, saying, “The LPN to RN Diploma Program provides our alumni and current practicing LPNs the opportunity to further their educational and career goals in nursing. The program is designed to benefit current LPNs and help strengthen the nursing workforce in our community. I like to say that we are a small nursing program that leaves a big imprint in healthcare, and I am very excited to be a part of helping our students grow professionally.”

Students who are interested in the program must already have an LPN license and attend an information session on the program before applying. Classes begin on August 2, and will be held four days a week Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Students who do not already hold an LPN license can get one from Miami Valley Career Technology Center’s Practical Nursing Program.
