Mercy Health - Toledo and Select Medical announce plans for a new hospital to open in 2023

Select Medical and Mercy Health - Toledo announced plans to start a joint critical illness recovery hospital on the fourth and fifth floors of Mercy Health - St. Charles Hospital. Mercy Health sponsors Mercy College of Ohio which provides degrees in the health sciences and health care to the community.

Select Medical announced on April 6, 2022 that it plans to open a new hospital within Mercy Health - Toledo early next year, focusing on critical illness recovery. The facility will have 31 beds and will be called Select Specialty Hospital - Oregon. It will be on the fourth and fifth floors of Mercy Health - St. Charles Hospital, according to a press release.

Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Specialty Hospitals at Select Medical, Tom Mullin, talked about the need for a new specialized hospital: "As the need for specialized post-acute care continues to grow, we are pleased to expand our world-class care in northern Ohio. Combined, our two Select Specialty Hospitals will have a 76-bed capacity ensuring patients throughout the region have access to the care they need to recover from critical illness and return to quality of life." 

Bob Baxter, the President of Mercy Health Toledo, spoke on the partnership between Select Medical and Mercy Health, saying, "We're excited to welcome Select Specialty Hospital to our system and look forward to working together to help improve the health of our patients and community."

Mercy Health - Toledo is part of the Bon Secours Mercy Health system, which is the fifth-largest Catholic health system in America, and one of the top twenty largest health systems in the county. Over 60,000 people are employed by the health system across seven states, including Ohio. Mercy Health serves twenty counties in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan and is based in Toledo, Ohio.  

In addition to hospitals, Mercy Health also sponsors Mercy College of Ohio, which provides higher education programs and degrees in the health sciences and provides health care to the community.

Mercy College of Ohio offers 31 programs in healthcare studies, ranging from certificate level programs through graduate studies.
