The new School of Engineering and Computer Science will be the combined home for the university’s longstanding engineering and computer science programs.
Calvin University has established a new School of Engineering and Computer Science to become the unified home for the university’s various engineering and computer science programs. Within their new home, students in these programs will still receive the same technical education in the classroom, but they will also engage with broader concepts about the integration of technology across life experiences, how technology can improve lives, and can it contribute to human flourishing.
According to an article on Calvin University's website, Kevin den Dulk, who serves as the university’s interim provost, was quoted as saying, “Technology is not simply about what we can build. Our students are challenged to ask the questions that matter. How can technology improve lives? How do we innovate responsibly? How do we design solutions that contribute to human flourishing? Those questions define the Calvin difference.”
Calvin University has had engineering and computer science programs for decades. Its engineering program, which includes concentrations in aerospace, chemical, civil and environmental, electrical and computer, energy/environment/sustainability, mechanical, and mechatronics engineering, was one of the earliest accredited engineering programs in Christian higher education, and along with its computer science program, holds ABET accreditation. The new School of Engineering and Computer Science will build a collective identity for these programs, representing a combined platform for future growth.
Beyond adding programs or restructuring academic offerings, the new School of Engineering and Computer Science will provide students with hands-on opportunities to work alongside faculty members, complete internships, and participate in research projects.
University president Greg Elzinga said, “Technology is transforming our world at an unprecedented pace. The future requires more than brilliant engineers and computer scientists. It requires leaders who will design, develop, and advance technologies with wisdom, integrity, and a deep sense of responsibility. The goal is not simply to prepare students to develop and build technology. At Calvin, we prepare students to build technology that improves lives, serves others, and honors God. Technology will continue to change. But our commitment to preparing students who use their gifts to serve others will not.”
