The grant will support the college’s efforts to increase adult literacy.
Owensboro Community and Technical College has received a $7,000 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, which gave a record-setting $16 million in one day to institutions in the 48 states the company operates to support initiatives that enhance adult literacy.
According to an article on Owensboro Community and Technical College’s website, Denine Torr, who serves as the executive director of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, was quoted as saying of the foundation’s mission, "Since the Foundation's inception in 1993, our focus has remained on making meaningful investments in students, teachers, and the organizations that support literacy and learning at every stage of life. We are grateful for the impact teachers and educators make every day and are excited to have another record-setting year of helping expand literacy access for learners of all ages. These funds will help educators enhance their instruction and create opportunities that help empower students to reach their full potential."
The $16 million given by the organization in one day, of which Owensboro Community and Technical College received $7,000, breaks the previous record set in May 2025, when the Dollar General Literacy Foundation gave $13.2 million. To date, the organization has provided $292 million in funding.
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation donates funding every year to nonprofit organizations, schools, and libraries that are within a 15-mile radius of a Dollar General store or distribution center in the 48 states in which they operate. The funding supports adult, family, summer, and youth literacy programs.
Lindsey Kafer, who serves as the Director of the Adult Education programs at Owensboro Community and Technical College, said, "Receiving support through the Dollar General Literacy Foundation allows us to continue expanding educational opportunities and strengthening literacy skills within our community. We are grateful for this investment and the positive impact it will have on the students and individuals we serve."
