The Crossroads Academic Medical Institute is a statewide initiative to strengthen the future of healthcare in Indiana.
Marian University and Purdue University have come together to launch the Crossroads Academic Medical Institute, an effort to expand healthcare education, training, and access across the state of Indiana. The collaborative network was announced on May 19, 2026 with both universities represented, as well as Indiana Governor Mike Braun and numerous healthcare leaders from around the state.
According to an article on Marian University’s website, Daniel J. Elsener, the president of Marian University, was quoted as saying during the announcement, “This institute and the collaborative power of higher education, working with private industry, government, outstanding clinical professionals, and healthcare providers, will advance promising research and exploration of new approaches to ensuring compassionate, high-quality, and affordable care.”
The Crossroads Academic Medical Institute will be a truly collaborative partnership that brings together Marian University, Purdue University, Community Health Network, Ascension St. Vincent, Parkview Health, Margaret Mary Health, Hancock Health, Daviess Community Hospital, Deaconess Health System, and the Indiana Rural Health Association. Additionally, the Catholic University of America will become a partner to help establish a national model for Catholic academic medicine. More partners are expected to join the initiative in the coming months.
The Tom and Julie Wood College of Osteopathic Medicine at Marian University will be the “academic anchor” of the collaboration, providing healthcare education and training, and Purdue University will contribute research to the collaboration.
The goals of the Crossroads Academic Medical Institute are to expand clinical training opportunities in urban and rural communities around Indiana, develop residency programs in underserved regions, strengthen pathways from education to practice for physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals, and advance research through shared expertise and infrastructure.
Dr. Amanda Wright, the dean of Marian University’s Tom and Julie Wood College of Osteopathic Medicine, noted the importance of these efforts for the health of the state’s residents. She said, “Indiana needs more physicians and healthcare professionals, and Crossroads Academic Medical Institute is designed to meet that challenge head-on.”
