The new building will house programs for students in the Hutson College of Agriculture who are majoring in Veterinary Technology and Pre-Veterinary Medicine, as well as future students in the planned College of Veterinary Medicine.
On April 22, 2026, Murray State University held a ground breaking ceremony for its new Veterinary Sciences building, located on the university’s West Farm. The Veterinary Sciences building will house programs for students who are studying in the Hutson College of Agriculture’s Veterinary Technology and Pre-Veterinary Medicine programs, and is planned to house courses for future students in the planned College of Veterinary Medicine, which is currently seeking approval from the American Veterinary Medical Association.
According to an article on Murray State University’s website, Dr. Laura Ken Hoffman, who serves as the founding dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, is quoted as saying of the new building, “We are very thankful for the countless individuals who have worked hard to see this vision, our state-of-the-art Veterinary Sciences building, become a reality. This new learning space will educate hundreds of students over the years, as we prepare graduates to become practicing veterinarians and leaders in animal health. This groundbreaking ceremony marks the start of exciting times for the Commonwealth of Kentucky and surrounding regions. Thank you to everyone who has helped make this possible and has played a role in laying a foundation for the future.”
Construction is expected to take about two years. The building will span 88,000 square feet and will house classrooms, laboratories, offices, study areas, and common areas. Funding for the building is supported by $60 million from the state’s biennium budget. Currently, Murray State University has the largest pre-veterinary medicine and veterinary technology student population in the state, and the new building will support continued enrollment growth for these programs.
The university continues working toward all necessary approvals to officially establish its College of Veterinary Medicine, which will establish a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program, with courses to be housed within the Veterinary Science building, as well as at the A. Carman Animal Health Technology Center, the Rudolph Equine Education Center, farms, and the Breathitt Veterinary Center.
University president Dr. Ron K. Patterson said, “Today’s groundbreaking represents our commitment to advancing veterinary science, supporting animal health, and preparing the next generation of compassionate, skilled professionals. Murray State University extends its gratitude to countless individuals who have provided their support and advocacy for this initiative. We are building more than a facility—we are building opportunities for our students while helping shape the future of veterinary medicine.”
