Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College introduces LPN to RN program option

The new program option is part of the existing nursing program and will be an accelerated option for LPNs to advance their careers.

Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College has a new LPN to RN option within its nursing program that will give licensed practical nurses the opportunity to advance their careers by becoming registered nurses. The LPN to RN option is an accelerated format class that can be completed in one year and will allow students who complete the program to sit for the NCLEX-RN exam.

According to an article on Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College’s website, Melissa Kirk, the director of nursing at the college, was quoted as saying of the new program option, “This new option reflects our commitment to providing flexible, career-focused opportunities for our students while addressing critical workforce needs in healthcare. We are excited to offer LPNs in our region a faster, more accessible path to becoming registered nurses.”

Individuals who are currently working as LPNs who wish to advance their careers would benefit from this program that has been specifically designed for them. The program builds upon the skills they learned to become LPNs through classroom learning, hands-on lab experiences, and clinical experiences at various local healthcare facilities.

In order to be eligible for the new program option, students must have a current LPN license. They must also have at least a 2.0 GPA from previous college-level courses, be eligible to enter college math and English, submit their transcripts, and submit a copy of their active and unencumbered LPN license.

Kirk noted, “No TEAS scores are required for practicing LPNs to enter this option of the program.”

Classes will begin on May 15, 2026, and the limited application window will open on April 20, 2026.
