Mott Community College receives two grants from Community Foundation of Greater Flint

The grants will be used to support the Flint & Genesee Literacy Network to strengthen literacy and family learning opportunities in Flint, Michigan.

Mott Community College has received two grants from the Community Foundation of Greater Flint that will support the Flint & Genesee Literacy Network. The grants will help the Flint & Genesee Literacy Network to strengthen the community’s literacy, as well as provide opportunities for families to learn together.

According to an article on Mott Community College’s website, Jessica Kitchner, who serves as the Director of the Flint & Genesee Literacy Network, was quoted as saying of the grant funding, “These grants support literacy at every stage and strengthen community-wide engagement through shared reading and building real educational pathways for families. We can use this funding to remove barriers, expand access to learning opportunities and continue building momentum toward lasting, measurable literacy change in Flint and Genesee County.”

The Community Foundation of Greater Flint’s Flint Kids Fund awarded the first grant, in the amount of $50,000, to support the Flint & Genesee Literacy Network’s 2Gen ESL/ABE Family Literacy program. The 2Gen ESL/ABE Family Literacy program provides literacy support for parents/caregivers and their children, including English as a Second Language instruction and Adult Basic Education for adults and literacy learning for children. The program also provides family engagement activities for participants to use at home. The funding will expand access to 75 to 120 parents or caregivers and 45 to 60 kids each year.

The second grant, in the amount of $2,703 and awarded by the Community Leadership Fund, Arthur L. Tuuri Health Fund II, and Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation Endowment Fund, will purchase 300 copies of the book Hood Feminism by Mikki Kendall for the Flint & Genesee Literacy Network’s Community Read 2026 Book Series.

Shaunda Richardson-Snell, the president of Mott Community College, said, “Mott Community College is proud to partner with the Community Foundation of Greater Flint in strengthening literacy resources and access for our community. These grants reflect our deep commitment to educational opportunity and community empowerment. When families have the tools and support they need to learn and grow together, the impact reaches far beyond the classroom.”
