Morehead State University establishes scholarship in honor of retiring faculty member

The Russell Mast SGA Scholarship Endowment was created by the university’s Student Government Association as a surprise for retiring vice president for student affairs Russ Mast.

Morehead State University’s vice president for student affairs, Russ Mast, is retiring after nearly 10 years of service to the university. In celebration of his accomplishments and in recognition of his status as one of the top employee donors to the university, the Student Government Association has established the Russell Mast SGA Scholarship Endowment, as a surprise that was revealed to Mast at a recent basketball game.

According to an article on Morehead State University’s website, Thomas Clem, who serves as the president of the Student Government Association, was quoted as saying of Mast’s commitment to students and to the university, "Russ has always been a champion for students. His dedication to listening, supporting, and advocating for us has shaped the student experience at MSU in countless ways.”

Allison Caudill, a Morehead State University alumna and the CEO of the MSU Foundation, echoed these sentiments, saying, "Russ has led by example, not only through his service but through his generosity. His personal commitment to giving has inspired others and strengthened our mission to support students. We are grateful for his leadership and the lasting impact of his contributions."

Mast, who worked at Morehead State University since 2016, has contributed more than $30,000 to the university throughout his tenure. This makes him one of the university’s highest-contributing employees in history.

Mast graduated from Eastern Kentucky University after attending Vincennes University and playing tennis there. In 1997, he received Eastern Kentucky University’s Outstanding Alumni Award from the College of Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Athletics. Before coming to Morehead State University, he served as the director of human resources for the Georgia Special Olympics Games and chaired the Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks & Recreation Authority.

When he came to Morehead State University in 2016, Mast began a streak of supporting students in many ways. He helped oversee Athletics, MSU Police, Disability Services, Enrollment Management, Financial Aid, Housing, Recreation & Wellness, Student Engagement, and the Dean of Students, and served as the advisor to the Student Government Association. Throughout the past 10 years, Mast also showed his support for student athletes by regularly attending athletic events.

Mast and his wife, Mary, plan to move to Georgia following his retirement to be closer to their children and grandchildren.

Speaking of his time at the university, and the scholarship that has been named in his honor, Mast said, "I believe it is important to show that you are invested in the success of the University, and more importantly, the students. I hope my contributions have had a positive impact and create opportunities for students to grow and learn in a compassionate and supportive community. I was moved deeply. In my wildest dreams, I never thought that a scholarship would be created in my name. It's nice to know that I made an impact while at MSU. I hope it supports student leaders who understand and appreciate how important their voice is. Students are the most important part of MSU. Sko Eags!"
