University of Southern Indiana to begin construction on administration building renovations

The renovation and expansion of the Wright Administration building is expected to be completed in 2027.

The University of Southern Indiana is preparing to break ground on the expansion and renovation of the Byron C. Wright Administration Building, which was the first building constructed on campus in 1969. The renovations will include infrastructure modernizations and aesthetic upgrades. The project will cost nearly $34 million, which was secured in the state capital funding 2023-2025 budget cycle.

According to an article on the University of Southern Indiana’s website, Steven J. Bridges, the university’s president, was quoted as saying of the project, “This project is not just about improving a building—it’s about honoring USI’s history while creating space for its future. The Wright Administration Building has been at the heart of this campus since the beginning and this renovation ensures it will continue to serve as a place where innovation, community and student success thrive for decades to come.”

The Wright Administration Building houses the President, Provost, and vice presidents’ offices, as well as offices for other administrators and departments. In addition, it houses student-centric spaces, like three lecture halls, a student lounge, and study areas.

Among the renovation projects are HVAC, electrical, and plumbing upgrades, and various structural improvements. At the beginning of the project, 26,000 square feet of the building will be demolished to rebuild and expand from a one-story building to a two-story building. The north face of the building will have floor-to-ceiling windows. The additional space will provide more room for offices and collaboration spaces for students.
