The expanded partnership creates a pathway for registered nurses and nursing students to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Michigan-Flint School of Nursing.
Monroe County Community College and the University of Michigan Flint School of Nursing have created a pathway for registered nurses and nursing students to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the university’s School of Nursing. Students will be able to earn their degree from U of M Flint while staying on campus at Monroe County Community College, making it easier for students to stay within their jobs and with their family while earning their degree.
According to an article on Monroe County Community College’s website, Christy Chisholm, who serves as the director of nursing at MCCC, was quoted as saying of the new pathway’s benefits, "We want to keep local talent here and offer world-class UM-Flint opportunities right in Monroe County. Earning a BSN can create access to leadership roles, specialized areas of practice and lay the foundation for graduate studies. There have never been more opportunities in nursing, including right here in Monroe County, and this program helps more people reach them."
The pathway also comes along with the opportunity for students to receive a scholarship that will pay tuition for the first course in the pathway, NSC 180: Legal and Moral Issues in Healthcare. The scholarship comes via the MiLeap State Initiative Grant and will be awarded to up to 15 eligible students. The scholarship covers $1,782.75, the total of tuition for NSC 180 and NUR 300, with students being responsible for any fees and course materials.
The pathway program follows a hybrid model that combines online coursework with occasional required in-person meetings on Monroe County Community College’s campus.
Tiffany Bishop, who serves as UM-Flint School of Nursing’s academic advisor, said, "[This pathway] makes it possible for more nurses to advance their education while balancing work and family. By blending in-person sessions with flexible online learning and providing scholarship support, we are building a stronger nursing workforce and helping improve health care in our region. We measure our success by the progress and achievements of our students and by seeing graduates make an impact in their communities."
