The grant comes via the Council on Postsecondary Education and will give the college financial support to make improvements and enhancements that will give parent students better opportunities for success.
Maysville Community and Technical College has received a Parenting Student Support Planning Grant from the Council on Postsecondary Education. The grant will provide the college with up to $50,000 to help remove barriers that stand in the way of success for students who are parents of young children.
According to an article on Maysville Community and Technical College’s website, Christy Kissick, who serves as a success coach on the college’s Rowan Campus, was quoted as saying of the grant, “MCTC is honored to receive the Parenting Student Support Planning Grant from the Council on Postsecondary Education. This grant allows us to better understand the unique challenges faced by student-parents and to work alongside community partners to create real, sustainable solutions. Supporting parenting students is not only about helping them succeed today — it’s about strengthening families and planting the seeds for future generations of college graduates.”
The grant project will begin with the college assessing the current needs of student parents on campus. After assessing what will be most beneficial to students, the college will begin building up community partnerships to help put those resources into place. Following these planning stages, the college will develop at least one pilot program to test out on campus, which may come in the form of a student-parent task force, evening and weekend childcare, or a referral hub for local childcare resources.
The goal of the grant project is to remove barriers to success that students who are also parents to young children may face to ensure that a college education is more accessible for more students.
