The scholarship was established and endowed via a gift of $1.97 million from the estate of Dr. Geraldine Chan, who graduated from the college in 1964.
Goshen College nursing students have a new scholarship to apply for thanks to an estate gift of $1.97 million from the late Dr. Geraldine Chan. The Geraldine Y. Chan Nursing Scholarship will help financially support students as they pursue an education in the field of nursing.
According to an article on Goshen College’s website, Jewel Yoder, who is a professor of nursing and the director of the college’s nursing program, was quoted as saying of the gift, “We are deeply grateful to Dr. Chan for this gift and the significant impact it will have! Scholarships for nursing students are pivotal in students’ ability to be successful. It can open doors to this profession for those who think that they could never afford a four-year nursing degree.”
Dr. Chan, who was born in Hong Kong, graduated from Goshen College in 1964 and went on to earn a degree in dentistry from Indiana University. She then practiced dentistry in New York City’s Chinatown. Chan had a place in her heart for international students at Goshen College, and, in 2023, prior to her passing, she also established a scholarship for international students.
In 1984, Chan had been quoted as saying, “I became a better person by studying at Goshen. I benefited from someone else’s generosity, and I know of no better way to say thank you … than by setting up a scholarship.”
Goshen College recently opened its new Center for Nursing and Public Health, which will significantly increase the number of students for whom the college can provide healthcare education.
