Betty T. Livengood Teacher Education Scholarship at West Virginia University Potomac State College to continue in perpetuity

The scholarship was initially established in 1993 and the family of Livengood has committed to continuing to fund the scholarship in perpetuity.

West Virginia University Potomac State College has offered the Betty T. Livengood Teacher Education Scholarship since it was first established in 1993, and thanks to a commitment from the family of Livengood, the scholarship will continue to be offered to education students at the college in perpetuity.

According to an article on West Virginia University Potomac State College’s website, Judith Brenneman, Betty Livengood’s daughter, was quoted as saying of her late mother, “Mother was affectionately known as the ‘Mother of Middle Schools’ for her dedication to the concept and development of the middle school program in West Virginia.”

Livengood was a passionate and committed teacher who taught within the Mineral County School system for 27 years. She attended Potomac State College for a time before transferring to Frostburg State University for her bachelor degree in education, and then she earned her master’s degree in supervision from West Virginia University in Morgantown.

Livengood received many awards and recognitions throughout her career, including receiving the West Virginia Department of Education’s Leader of Learning award in 1985 and the Delta Kappa Gamma 1988 listing of Outstanding Women Educators in West Virginia. At various points in her career she served as the director of Curriculum and Instruction for K-12 general education, the staff development coordinator for the Mineral County School System, teacher of grades 1-4 at Short Gap Primary School, and teacher of graduate-level classroom management, curriculum, and administration courses at Potomac State College. She retired in 1989, and the Betty T. Livengood Teacher Education Scholarship was established in 1993 to honor accomplishments and her love of teaching.

In order to be considered for the scholarship, students must be residents of West Virginia, enrolled at Potomac State College, and majoring in education. Preference will be given to students who come from Frankfort or Keyser High Schools.
