Harmony Senior Services Nursing Scholarship established at BridgeValley Community and Technical College

The Harmony Senior Services Nursing Scholarship was established by the James R. and Augustine D. Smith Charitable Foundation and every year for the next ten years will provide ten nursing students with $1,000.

BridgeValley Community and Technical College has a new nursing scholarship available for students. The Harmony Senior Services Nursing Scholarship was established by the James R. and Augustine D. Smith Charitable Foundation in honor of Ona Shrader Smith. Harmony Senior Services was founded by James R. Smith and provides nursing home care for middle-income seniors.

According to an article on BridgeValley Community and Technical College’s website, Andrea Petry, who serves as the Director of the BridgeValley Foundation, was quoted as saying of the newly established scholarship, "We are grateful to Harmony for recognizing the impact our students will have in meeting the region’s growing healthcare needs. This gift helps remove financial barriers while honoring the values that define excellent patient care."

The Harmony Senior Services Nursing Scholarship will be awarded annually for the next ten years. Each year, ten nursing students who have completed at least one semester of study and have maintained at least a 3.0 grade point average will be awarded $1,000 to help them pay for their tuition, books, and other nursing program materials.

James R. Smith said of his decision to establish the scholarship, "This scholarship is a way to invest in the next generation of caregivers who will serve our communities with dignity and dedication. We are proud to support a local institution that shares our values and vision for care."

BridgeValley Community and Technical College and Harmony Senior Services share the goal of strengthening the healthcare workforce in West Virginia and creating paths to accessible healthcare education.
