It will be the first football field that has ever been on Calvin University’s campus. The project is a multi-phase plan, with each new phase beginning once funding has been secured.
Calvin University has broken ground on its campus’ first ever football and lacrosse field. The multi-phase construction project will result in a football stadium, but only the first phase will begin until additional funding is secured to result in the stadium.
According to an article on Calvin University's website, Jim Timmer, who serves as the university’s director of athletics, was quoted as saying of the impact the new field will have on the university, "This field is the beginning of something transformational. It's not just a place to practice—it’s the start of a long-term vision that reflects our commitment to excellence in athletics, facilities, and student experience. Every piece is intentionally planned, and we’re excited to share what’s next.”
Phase One of the project is currently underway, with the phase expected to reach completion in Fall 2025. Phase One will result in a lighted turf field to use for football practices and men’s and women’s lacrosse practices. It will feature AstroTurf, LED lighting, a scoreboard and play clocks, backstop netting, and access pathways for emergency vehicles and maintenance vehicles. Despite the field being set for football practices beginning in the fall, the football team will use the soccer stadium for games until the football stadium is completed. Phase One has been completely funded thanks to the support of donors.
University president Greg Elzinga said, “This is a major step forward for our university. Bringing football to campus and enhancing lacrosse is about much more than just building a field—it’s about building community. The energy, tradition, and spirit that come with having home games on campus will benefit every student, every fan, and the entire Calvin experience.”
Fundraising is currently underway for Phase Two of the project, which, once funded, will bring perimeter fencing, seating for 3,500 spectators, an upper and lower concourse, and a press box.
Beyond Phase Two, the university plans to make many additions to the stadium once funding has been secured. These future plans include a ticket booth, concessions stands, locker rooms, restrooms, fan amenities, and meeting rooms.
Timmer said, “Every shovel in the ground represents a step toward a future where football is fully woven into the Calvin campus experience. We’re grateful to our donors, excited for our students, and looking forward to welcoming the community to our field very soon.”
