The new scholarship will be automatically awarded to every student who graduates from Dundee High School in 2025 and enrolls full time at Monroe County Community College.
Monroe County Community College has announced the establishment of the Roof Family Dundee Promise Scholarship, which will provide an automatic $2,000 scholarship to every student who graduates from Dundee High School in 2025 who enrolls as a full time student at Monroe County Community College. The scholarship builds upon the existing Community College Guarantee, which provides free tuition and zero fees for students at MCCC. The Roof Family Dundee Promise scholarship can be used on expenses that are not covered by the Community College Guarantee, including books, computers, gas, rent, and food.
According to an article on Monroe County Community College’s website, Dr. Joshua W. Myers, who serves as the executive director of The Foundation at MCCC, was quoted as saying of the new scholarship, “The Roof Family Dundee Promise Scholarship amplifies the impact of the Community College Guarantee. Tuition-and-fee-free community college now puts an education within reach for all Michigan students; however, students still struggle with basic needs. This generous scholarship will help students overcome barriers that might otherwise prevent them from successfully completing their education at MCCC.”
The Roof Family Dundee Promise Scholarship will be awarded to every graduating senior of Dundee High School and will not be based on academic performance or financial need. The student must complete the FAFSA in order to be eligible to receive the scholarship. Students can qualify for the scholarship right up until the beginning of the Fall 2025 semester.
Don and Pat Roof were named Monroe County Community College Supporters of the Year in 2021. The Roofs began contributing to the college financially in 2014 by donating to the college’s Foundation to create the Roof Family Foundation Scholarship, and during the COVID pandemic, the couple donated to the college’s Project Persist initiative that provided emergency aid to students.
Speaking of his and Pat’s decision to continue their financial support of the college, Don said, “[My wife] Pat and I began dating when we were students at Dundee High School, and we now want to give back to the community where our life began together. We are focused on eliminating poverty, and one of the best ways we know to do that is to help students improve their lifetime earning potential with a degree. It is our intent to incentivize more graduates from Dundee to attend MCCC in the future. It’s our plan to continue supporting this scholarship, and we hope it will convince more and more Dundee graduates each year to choose MCCC.”
