The grant comes via the Dollar General Literacy Foundation and will support the college’s various adult literacy programs and help strengthen the community as a whole.
Somerset Community College has received a $5,120 grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation that will be used to help support the college’s efforts to enhance adult literacy and community education programs. The Dollar General Literacy Foundation donated $13.2 million in total to support adult literacy in the store’s 48-state service area.
According to an article on Somerset Community College’s website, Denine Torr, who serves as the executive director of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, was quoted as saying, “For over 30 years, the Foundation has been investing in literacy and basic education programs in our hometown communities. Today’s grant announcement is a celebration of our unwavering commitment to student and teacher success. We are grateful to all the grant recipients for their commitment to advancing education and helping students thrive.”
One of the college’s programs that will receive funding from the grant is the Adult Education and Literacy program. It provides adults with GED preparation, degree pathways, and general skills training. By enhancing their reading, writing, and math skills, adults in the region will be enhancing their employability, leading to more opportunities for them and their families.
Every year, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation provides funding to schools and organizations that help educate, foster a love of reading, and provide summer camps or similar youth literacy and adult literacy programs. The Foundation provides funding to nonprofit organizations, schools, and libraries that are within a 15-mile radius of Dollar General stores that meet the criteria.
Speaking of the help this donation will provide to the college, Cynthia McGaha, who is the Director of Adult Education at SCC, said, “We are incredibly grateful to the Dollar General Literacy Foundation for recognizing the importance of adult education and supporting the journeys of our students.”
