The grant comes from the Humana Foundation, with which the University of Louisville has been in partnership for some time. The funding will benefit the university’s Humana Health Equity Research Center.
The University of Louisville is continuing its ongoing partnership with the Humana Foundation. The university has received a grant in the amount of $6.75 million that will enhance the capabilities of its Humana Health Equity Research Center to research health equity issues and form initiatives to combat them.
According to an article on the University of Louisville’s website, Kim Schatzel, the university’s president, was quoted as saying about the grant funding, “The Humana Foundation’s generous grant enables us to not only enhance our research capacity but also continue our commitment to breaking down barriers and achieving equal health outcomes. This partnership will generate a lasting impact for all and allows us to further amplify our efforts to reduce health disparities and fulfill our mission of improving lives through education, research and service.”
The Humana Foundation previously committed funding to the Humana Health Equity Research Center within the University of Louisville’s School of Public Health and Information Sciences as part of both institutions’ desires to research the reasons for health inequity in the Louisville area, as well as find ways, through the data garnered by the research center, to begin making changes that will remove those disparities. The grant funding will provide faculty with resources to undertake large research projects as well as develop frameworks to help other communities with the same issues.
Health disparities often arise in communities due to factors like inaccessible affordable housing, unequal access to quality healthcare providers, and differences in education levels. The Humana Health Equity Research Center aims to use data it garners via faculty research to address these issues to ensure more equitable healthcare access.
CEO of the Humana Foundation Tiffany Benjamin said, “The Humana Foundation is proud to continue its partnership with the University of Louisville in its mission to foster health equity and drive impactful research and community engagement. Together, we aim to generate lasting, meaningful change by addressing the root causes of health disparities and ensuring that innovative solutions are accessible to all.”
