The university has received $645,158 to distribute as scholarships for STEM students.
Walsh University has received $645,158 in funding from the Ohio Department of Higher Education’s Choose Ohio First initiative. The Choose Ohio First initiative is intended to help motivate individuals to pursue STEM education, as well as a means of bolstering the STEM-related workforce in the state by encouraging students to start and complete their education in Ohio, and then stay in Ohio to work.
According to an article on Walsh University’s website, Tim Collins, the university’s president, said, “This funding enables Walsh University to enhance our STEM programs and provide students with an education that directly aligns with the needs of today’s industries. We are committed to equipping our students with the skills and experiences they need to build meaningful careers and contribute to Ohio’s dynamic and growing workforce.”
Choose Ohio First was introduced in 2008 and has significantly increased the number of students both enrolling in and graduating from STEM programs, thanks to scholarship funding and research projects and internships with local employers.
The funding received from this round of allocations will be distributed as STEM scholarships in the 2026 academic year.
Ohio Department of Higher Education Chancellor Mike Duffey said, “Choose Ohio First continues to provide students who stay in Ohio to continue their education with the opportunity to succeed in high-demand STEM fields. This newest award demonstrates Walsh University’s commitment to giving its students in such fields as computer science, biology, and chemistry the tools for a successful future.”
