State of Michigan awards Kirtland Community College funding for campus modernization projects

Public Act 103 of 2023 allocated $32.8 million to 22 community colleges throughout the state to enhance campuses under the categories of infrastructure, technology, equipment, maintenance, and safety.

Kirtland Community College received $420,000 from the State of Michigan thanks to Public Act 103 of 2023, which has allocated a significant amount of money to 22 Michigan community colleges for campus improvements. Kirtland Community College is choosing to use the funding to modernize its Grayling and Gaylord campuses.

According to a press release on Kirtland Community College’s website, Dr. Thomas Quinn, who serves as Kirtland Community College’s president, expressed his gratitude to receive the funding. He was quoted as saying, “Kirtland offers its special thanks to the Governor and legislature for their leadership in supporting Kirtand and other Michigan Community Colleges.  The funds will help the college strengthen its role as an economic engine for the communities it serves. These Funds will be used to enhance the education and skills of Kirtland graduates and prepare them for jobs in northern Michigan.”

A similar funding plan was allocated to public universities in the state in 1999, but community colleges were excluded at that time. Now, 22 community colleges in the state are receiving those benefits. The funding is to be spent in the areas of infrastructure, technology, equipment, maintenance, safety, and on-campus residences.

“Our colleges deeply appreciate the investment approved by the Governor and Legislature. Improving campus infrastructure will ensure more success for our colleges and their students,” said Brandy Johnson, who is the president of the Michigan Community College Association.
