Union University once again hosting debate competition for homeschooled students

The National Invitational Tournament of Champions debate competition will be hosted on Union University’s campus for the third time since 2017.

The stage for the National Invitational Tournament of Champions debate competition will be at Union University for the third year. Union University has hosted the competition in 2017 and in 2021, making this the third time Union University has had the honor of being the host for the homeschool student tournament.

According to an article on Union University’s website, Dan Griffin, who serves as the university’s vice president for enrollment management, spoke of his enthusiasm for the event being held on campus, saying, “Hosting NITOC has been a huge honor for Union University, and we’re thrilled to welcome participants from all over the country back to campus this year. NITOC competitors are bright, talented young people. The event is always a positive experience for Union, and we’re looking forward to what we expect will be another great competition.”

The National Invitational Tournament of Champions will be held from May 27 to June 1. It is anticipated that approximately 600 homeschooled students will be taking part in the competition, and their families will likely attend along with them, bringing about a significant boost in the number of people in the area. This will be a boon for the community, as hotels and restaurants can expect increased business from tournament participants and their families.

The competition is held by Stoa, a Christian homeschooling organization that according to its website aims “To train homeschool students to speak boldly and change the world for Christ.” The NITOC is a speech and debate competition for homeschooled students who are members of Stoa and who earn an invitation based on their National Christian Homeschool Speech and Debate Rankings.

Hosting the competition has also been a benefit to Union University. According to Griffin, more than 50 students have enrolled at the university after having participated in the National Invitational Tournament of Champions.
