The College of Dental Medicine at Lincoln Memorial University has found a new associate dean for academic affairs in Mark L. Cannon, DDS, MD.

Before finding his new home at Lincoln Memorial University, Cannon earned his Diplomate status from the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. He also serves as a professor of Otolaryngology at the Division of Dentistry at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine. Cannon has long been a member of the International Association of Pediatric Dentistry, as well. Cannon is also the research coordinator of the residency program at Ann and Robert Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, as well as the founder of a large and highly respected multi-specialty private practice in the city’s suburbs. He is also a Master Fellow at the American Academy for Oral and Systemic Health.

As a native of Nebraska, Cannon attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree (or DDS), before attending Children’s Memorial Hospital for his Pediatric Dentistry residency program. He then went on to earn his Masters in Pediatric Dentistry at Northwestern University. After earning his degree there, Cannon was invited to remain at the school in a full time teaching capacity. While teaching, he worked to set up his own dental office where he practiced full time. The practice was found to be quite successful, and soon grew to become a multi-specialty dental practice of some size that served many patients in Chicago’s Northwest suburbs. Back in 2000, Dr. Cannon’s position at Northwestern was transferred to the university’s medical school, and he participated in research in the field of oral medicine which helped him rise to the rank of professor at the school.

In an article posted on Lincoln Memorial University’s website, Cannon was quoted about his new position, saying, “There has never been a time more exciting for the dental profession because of all the scientific progress in our understanding of total body health and the corresponding importance of oral health. The graduates of LMU will be given the knowledge to succeed not just in the near future, but also as the specialty of oral medicine advances. This time is exciting for all of us in oral medicine education, never has our responsibility been so great, and the opportunities so invigorating.”

A prolific guest lecturer, Cannon has spoken at a number of universities, such as the University of Illinois, Chicago, Department of Pediatric Dentistry, CES Universidad (Medellin, Columbia), Nova Southeastern University, Louisiana State University, University of Southern California, University of California, Los Angeles, University of Alabama-Birmingham, University of Texas- Houston,  Sao Paulista State University, Aracatuba, Brazil, and University of Athens, Greece.

In addition to presenting at other universities, Cannon has also presented for a great number of organizations, such as the European Association of Pediatric Dentistry, American Academy for Oral and Systemic Health, Probiotics, Prebiotics, and New Food Congress (Rome), Hellenic Society of Pediatric Dentistry, Korean Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Brazilian Association of Pediatric Dentistry, Mexican Association of Pediatric Dentistry, Birmingham Dental Society, Utah Dental Society, Texas Dental Society, Chicago Dental Society, World Congress of Preventive Dentistry, the Australasian Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the Pediatric Dental Association of Asia, the International Association of Pediatric Dentistry, the World Congress of Biological Materials, the Academy of Dental Materials, the American Society of Dentistry for Children, and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

Cannon has also been invited by the Karolinska Institute to attend the Nobel Forum in 2016 and the Nobel Assembly in 2017.

Dr. Cannon finds that of all of his accomplishments, he is most proud of being a father of five and a grandfather of five children.
