Lansing Community College’s Diane Roose recognized by the Association of Community College Trustees

Lansing Community College’s Diane Roose has been named as the recipient of the Association of Community College Trustees (or ACCT)’s 2023 Central Region William H. Meardy Faculty Member Award.

Roose has spent the past two years serving Lansing Community College, and is beginning to gain recognition as the Medical Assistant program’s lead faculty member.

This regional level award qualifies Roose as a finalist for the ACCT’s national honor, which will be announced and presented in Las Vegas this October.

Before joining Lansing Community College in 2021, Roose spent several years at Macomb Community College. Upon coming to LCC, she immediately began the task of streamlining and updating the college’s Medical Assistant program to be able to meet the high standards of both accreditation and the healthcare industry. Roose worked to advance the school’s traditional Medical Assistant program as well as LCC’s Sparrow Hospital Apprenticeship. 

In an article posted on Lansing Community College’s website, Roose talked about what teaching means to her. She noted that teaching is less about the hard information of the curriculum, but rather assisting students in their exploration of their chosen field of study, and helping them listen to and learn from their patients as they develop a desire for continuous learning that will last well beyond their time at LCC.

"Excellence in teaching, to me, means that students get a sense of commitment to their career and that they have integrity. It's my job to show them the way and help instill a commitment to education where learning never ends," she said.

As well as working with the students and industry partners of Lansing Community College, Roose also represents the school on the national level. She has presented at the American Association of Community Colleges conference twice, and served as the president of The National Network of Health Career Programs in Two-Year Colleges.

Roose’s nomination for the ACCT award was made by Lansing Community College Board of Trustees Chair Angela Matthews.

This is the second year in a row that Lansing Community College has had a faculty member recognized at the annual ACCT awards. Last year, LLC Trustee Robert Proctor received the M. Dale Ensign Trustee Leadership award while the school’s Board of Trustees received the regional Charles Kennedy Equity Award.
