University of Toledo student athletes continue trend of academic achievement

Student athletes at the University of Toledo have continued a six-semester trend of collectively increasing grade point averages across all sports with a GPA of 3.472. Individual teams also set their own records in academic achievement.

Student athletes at the University of Toledo have collectively earned a record high grade point average of 3.472 for the 2023 spring semester. The announcement was initially made by the Vice President and Director of Athletics Bryan B. Blair in late May.

This appears to be part of a continuing trend for the University of Toledo, as the previous record GPA was set back in the 2022 fall semester with an average grade point average of 3.401. Rocket student athletes have now achieved the best academic year in the history of the school.

Each of the past six semesters have seen University of Toledo student athletes setting a new GPA record, with a semester GPA average of 3.3 or higher in the past nine consecutive semesters.

This spring semester, it was the women’s swimming and diving team that had the highest team GPA at 3.745. It was followed by softball with an average GPA of 3.749, women’s golf at 3.748, and men’s golf at 3.734.

Other teams set all time team GPA records including football with an average 3.202 and men’s tennis at 3.679.

There were a handful of other highlights this semester including 80% of student athletes (295 out of a total 365) making the honor roll, which requires having a GPA of at least 3.00. The 80% figure is the highest percentage in school history. A record 58% of student athletes (212) earned a spot on the Dean’s List, which requires a 3.50 GPA. A record 21% of students (77) earned President’s List honors, which require a perfect 4.0 GPA.

In an article posted on the University of Toledo’s website, Vice President and Director of Athletics Bryan B. Blair was quoted on the student athletes’ achievements, saying, “Wow! Words can’t express how proud I am of our student-athletes’ academic performance this year. Our student-athletes make it clear that you don’t have to choose between your academic pursuits and your athletic dreams at The University of Toledo. As Rockets, you can be champions on the field and in the classroom. To set the record with a 3.472 department grade point average in the same year in which we won six Mid-American Conference championships is nothing short of amazing. I would also like to applaud the outstanding support provided by our Student-Athlete Support Services (SASS) staff, our University faculty, staff, coaches and parents who support the achievements of our student-athletes in the classroom. It is truly a team effort.”

Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student Athlete Support Services Tony Belt also weighed in, saying, “Congratulations to all of our student-athletes on an outstanding semester. There are a lot of people who play an essential role in the academic success of our student-athletes, and semesters like this speak volumes to their support. To the SASS staff, coaches, campus partners, donors and specifically 1923 Society members: Thank you for your hard work and contributions that directly impact our student-athletes and their holistic development.”
