Central Ohio Technical College implements unmanned aircraft systems certificate

A new drone operation certificate will be available at Central Ohio Technical College that will contain four classes over two semesters and prepare students to take the Federal Aviation Administration Part 107 Exam.

In the upcoming Fall 2023 semester, a new Unmanned Aircraft Systems Certificate is being launched at Central Ohio Technical College. This comes as small, unmanned aircraft systems, which are drones under 55 lbs, are quickly changing industries and businesses all over the world. Drones are already being used in real estate, pipeline inspection, mining, wildlife monitoring and reporting, utility substation and power line inspections, wind turbine blade inspections, law enforcement, emergency medical services, package delivery, infrastructure, agriculture, and more industries of all kinds.

Most notable, drones are also being used for military operations and after natural disasters to search for survivors and assess damage. Often, drones are used to help avoid risking the safety of those who traditionally have worked in certain jobs like inspecting unstable dams and buildings, wind turbines, and so on.

The new drone certificate program at Central Ohio Technical College includes two semesters worth of four courses. Lectures will be provided online, with hands-on skills sessions taking place at the school’s Newark campus. Once students successfully complete the program, they will be qualified to take the Federal Aviation Administration Part 107 Exam, which is required to fly drones.

More information about the program can be found by emailing cotcadmissions@mail.cotc.edu or by calling 740-366-9222, and more information about Central Ohio Technical College can be found online at the school’s website.
