Dental Hygiene students at Roane State Community College care for community in many ways

Roane State Community College students from the Dental Hygiene program recently took part in a run for Parkinson’s and a free dental clinic.

Roane State Community College Dental Hygiene students have been spending the last semester giving back to those in the community in several ways.

The students have participated in a 5K run/walk for Parkinson’s research, and used their education to offer two free dental clinics for the community. The participation in the run/walk was in honor of Linda Evans-Pollard, who is the mother of the dental hygiene program director, Melinda Gill. Evans-Pollard has Parkinson’s disease. Overall, 28 students, friends, and families participated in the event that took place in October.

Melinda Gill spoke with WATE about the event, saying, “I was truly touched by their kindness and love shown towards my mother and this truly worthy cause.”

During the free clinic that also took place in October, students were able to care for 12 patients from six counties, including Roane, Knox, Cumberland, Blount, and Anderson counties. Students performed services such as dental x-rays, extractions, exams, and cleanings.

Dr. Jay Hollingsworth also donated his time and talents to help the event. He was aided by hygienists Mindy Willocks, Crystal Greene, Janna Gentry, Cristina Graham, and Brittany Roybal.

Another free clinic will take place on February 19, 2023. Additional details will be put out as the event draws nearer; however, more information on Roane State Community College and its Dental Hygiene program and its events, offerings, and more can be found at its website.
