Ohio Short-Term Certificate Grant Program set to give up to $2,000 to students in need who are enrolled in in-demand career certificate courses

The Ohio Department of Higher Education has set up the Ohio Short-Term Certificate Grant Program, which will award up to $2,000 in need-based aid to students enrolled in 26 credit and non-credit certificates.

A new grant program is available to students at Owens Community College thanks to the Ohio Department of Higher Education. It is called the Ohio Short-Term Certificate Grant Program and it is filled with nearly $190,000 in funds. In-state students who are in financial need will be able to get up to $2,000 in need-based aid toward the cost of career certificates for in-demand industries.

Owens Community College, among other qualifying schools, will receive funds directly from the Ohio Department of Higher Education to distribute to eligible students.

Manufacturing and skilled trades, health support professions, pre-apprenticeships, office support, logistics, sales, and first responders are among the 26 credit and non-credit options that are counted as in-demand. The credit certificates are 30 hours or less, and the non-credit certificates are 900 on-the-clock hours or less.

In an interview with the Sentinel-Tribune, Provost and Chief Academic Officer of Owens Community College Denise Smith spoke about the grant, saying, “We are excited to bring this opportunity to Owens Community College students. After they complete their short-term certificate or credential, they will be prepared for licensure, if it’s required for employment, or they will be able to take the next step in a career pathway.”

The grant funds will cover tuition and approved fees only, such as fees associated with the cost of services for the certificate programs, according to the Short-Term Certificate Grant Program Application.

Students can apply online for the Ohio Short Term Certificate Grant Program.
