Bluefield State University introduces new Master of Science in Engineering Technology program

The new program is the university’s second graduate degree program and its first graduate degree in a STEM subject.

Bluefield State University has launched its new Master of Science in Engineering Technology program, the university’s first graduate degree in a STEM subject and its second graduate degree program overall. The program will launch in the Fall 2026 semester.

According to an article on Bluefield State University’s website, university President Darrin Martin was quoted as saying, “As our first master’s degree in a STEM field, this program is a historic achievement for the university and an investment in the future workforce of our region. As technology continues to transform every sector of the economy, Bluefield State is preparing professionals who can lead that transformation. Employers are seeking professionals who possess advanced technical expertise and the leadership skills to manage projects, teams, and emerging technologies. The MSET program was designed to meet that demand while offering the flexibility today’s students and working professionals require.”

The Master of Science in Engineering Technology program is a 30-credit-hour program that can be completed in one year if attending full time and two years if attending part time. It is an online program that can be completed asynchronously, though there is a hybrid option available, as well.

The program’s curriculum was developed through feedback from the region’s employers and with the expertise of faculty members in the engineering technology, engineering management, and computer science programs. The MSET program will help students develop skills in project management, automated systems engineering, emerging technologies, and research methods. It will emphasize both practical skills and leadership skills.

The program is the second graduate degree offering following the Master of Business Administration program.
