Hiram College has received $459,361 from the State of Ohio’s Choose Ohio First program to strengthen the state’s workforce in the fields of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM). The funding will provide scholarships to students who are studying these fields and are pursuing careers in them.
According to an article on Hiram College’s website, the college’s Interim President Jim Malz was quoted as saying of the funding, “This investment reflects the strength of Hiram College’s commitment to preparing students for meaningful careers in high-demand fields. Through hands-on learning, close faculty mentorship, and real-world experiences, Hiram students are gaining the skills and knowledge needed to make an impact in Ohio and beyond.”
Steve Romberger, Ph.D., who is an associate professor of chemistry and the Choose Ohio First director for Hiram College, added, “Programs like Choose Ohio First directly support student success while strengthening Ohio’s future workforce. We are grateful to the Ohio Department of Higher Education for its continued partnership and investment in our students.”
Choose Ohio First is the state’s workforce and scholarship initiative to strengthen its science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine by providing funding to students who are studying these subjects and wish to pursue careers in these fields. By reducing financial stress as a barrier to education, students will have enhanced access to following their passions into high-demand careers that will benefit the region.
According to the Choose Ohio First webpage on Hiram College’s website, students are eligible for Choose Ohio First scholarships if they have declared a major in Biochemistry, Biology, Biomedical Humanities, Chemistry, Computer Science, Environmental Studies, Neuroscience, Physics, or Nursing. The page also notes that students who become Choose Ohio First scholars will receive additional benefits like participation in a STEM-centric community, professional development opportunities, research opportunities, and scholarship engagement.
