Ivy Tech Community College breaks ground on Nursing & Health Sciences building

The new building is expected to increase the college’s total enrollment by 21% and will open in January 2028.

Ivy Tech Community College Fort Wayne & Kosciusko County officially broke ground for the new Nursing & Health Sciences building on May 20, 2026. The building of the new facility is part of Ivy Tech Community College’s “Reinvest, Reinvent, Revitalize” restructuring initiative, which focuses on enhancing the student experience.

According to an article on Ivy Tech Community College’s website, Dr. Kim Barnett-Johnson, who serves as the Chancellor of Ivy Tech Fort Wayne & Kosciusko County, was quoted as saying of the new facility, “This new facility promises to increase enrollment by an estimated 21 percent and will increase specialty lab spaces by an estimated 48 percent. But it is more than just a new building—it’s a workforce development engine, an innovation hub, and a direct investment in the long-term health and economic vitality of our communities. This much needed project has been in the making for quite some time now, and we are excited that the day is finally here.”

The new building is planned to be 50,000 square feet with advanced simulation labs, patient care suites, collaborative learning spaces, and updated classrooms. The facility is meant to be a hospital-centered learning environment to prepare students to enter into the healthcare workforce pipeline.

The “Reinvest, Reinvent, Revitalize” restructuring initiative, of which the new Nursing & Health Sciences building is part, is expected to increase student enrollment by 35% over the next six years. Other efforts within this initiative include the renovation of Coliseum Campus, centralizing student services into one location, renovating work spaces to adapt to hybrid-style work, and demolishing Harshman and Carroll Halls to support the Fort Wayne Developmental Center.

According to the webpage for the “Reinvest, Reinvent, Revitalize” restructuring initiative, Andy Kapocius, who serves as the college’s Director of Facilities, was quoted as saying, “Having spent my entire professional career in Facilities construction, maintenance, and management, I look forward to the opportunity to be part of the team that makes another lasting impression on students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Expanding the Nursing and Health Science program with a new 50,000 square-foot facility offers unparalleled opportunities for the next generation of Fort Wayne Ivy Tech students.”
